Self Love and Attunement

I was reflecting today on attunement and self love so I wanted to share some thoughts with you.

I’ve been witnessing that many people at this time are not living a life that is aligned with their passion or calling. They are doubting themselves, questioning their self-worth and self belief. I wonder why this is so?

Some of this maybe due to the current energies we are living with at this time. Although it feels as though there are breakthroughs coming and the world is as ever, shifting and changing, the structures and systems we are living under still seem to keep us oppressed. We are required to conform, to function in a certain way, to maintain the status quo. We are deeply entrenched in a system whether externally imposed or internally due to our beliefs and having to live our lives in the ways others expect us, that we don’t have much time to connect and tune into our own innate wisdom and nature that we are misguided and lost. We lose sense of ourselves. We are often worrying about others or things, that we tend to forget about ourselves. We are not attuned to our own needs.

What does being attuned or attunement mean? Attunement is being aware of what is going on in the present moment for either others or ourselves. We can be highly attuned in one area but not attuned in another. For example, we might have a lot of empathy and put others needs before our own, so we are acutely aware of how others are feeling and notice every little thing, like when they are happy, sad, tired or need attention, but we fail to recognise our own needs and desires. If we neglect ourselves in this way, we may often feel low or depressed or have angry outbursts because we have left our needs unchecked. This serves no-one.

In our desire to please others, to not break the mould, crumble tradition or because we are focused on material things and status symbols, we often live our lives just doing and not enough time being or attending to the core of ourselves, our soul to see what we really need, what our soul is calling us to do or the person we need to be to feel fulfilled and fully function in this lifetime. And this lifetime is such a brief experience so we should make the most of it and note that if we are not encountering life fully in this way then we can feel lost. Of course, this does have to be balanced with daily life as we do need to ensure our basic material needs are being met such as being safe, warm, having enough to eat etc. But beyond this are we taking care of ourselves and those around us and tuning in.

How do we find moments to attune to how we are feeling, what our soul is calling out for? How do we find time to reflect and grow? How do we tap into the subtle energy and wisdom that is there in us and all around us?

There are many ways to do this.

Nature walk - go on a nature walk. Nature is ultimate container, our mother who nurtures and protects us. If you walk silently in nature (you don’t have to be alone to walk in silence, go with a friend or partner if you prefer) you will often find insight and guidance comes to you.

Breathing - taking a moment to sit and breathe, just noticing your breath is another wonderful way. Notice your breath, breath is life, your life force. Without it there is no life. How is your breathing, is it regular, fast or erratic when you are doing certain things? When is it calm, what do you notice?

Movement - is another meaningful way. Notice, how you feel when you are walking. Do some form of exercise of movement-based practices, such as yoga, Qi Gong or just go for a run. Moving the body gets stagnant energy flowing.

Talk to someone - having a space where you can share the inner workings of your mind and emotions is so important.

Take time to relax - have a bath with essential oils that stimulate or relax the senses. Caring for yourself and attuning to what you need.

These are all simple things which do not take a lot of time, but we get so caught up in the day to day that we often forget to take the time to nurture and love ourselves, to tune into what we need and to just be who or what we are being called to.

So today take some time for yourself. To be attuned to yourself and to practice self-love.
